Here are some suggestions:

1 - if you enable the explorer status bar then the revision number (from
which you can determine if it is HEAD or branch) already appears there
when you click on / select a file

2- the revision number also appears in the hint box if your mouse hovers
over a file

3 - Use the source code you've been given to enhance the columnprovider
feature, eg:
http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.platformsdk.shell/browse
_thread/thread/e79555b9910c5f68

4 - Use the source code you've been given to enhance TortoiseCVS in some
other way, eg: if the primary reason why you want the column is to
determine if the sandbox is a branch or HEAD then here are some other
suggestions:
* icon overlays for the sandbox folders - with a tree for a branch
* alter the status so it shows the branch
* alter the hint box so it shows the branch

5 - Contribute financially to TortoiseCVS or CVSNT so someone else who
has the skills can add some features.
