1. Do CVS, Update Special, get HEAD revision
2. Merge the version of the 1.x branch into HEAD and commit it

Hello Rebecca,

Thank you for your quick response.

I am sorry if my initial post was not clear.... The branch is made...
symbolic name tag included. all is good...
(I did just about exactly what the doc link you provided shows.)

My question pertains to the NEXT revision on the trunk.... I want the next
revision (on the main trunk) of ALL files to be 2.1.

I use CVSNT (TCVS 1.10.7; CVSNT 2.5.03 Bld2382). I am unaware of what
"straight CVS" is. (it has been a while, but if I am remembering correctly,
when one downloads Tortoise, one gets a corresponding CVSNT.)

And, Yes I am the administrator.

Thanks,

Gordie

      Hi Gordie,
You don’t get to choose revision numbers on the new branch. And
TCVS is just a client, you know, so it is your cvs server that
defines how branches are to be made. Are you using straight CVS for
your server/repository or CVSNT? I don’t recall if CVSNT does
anything different from straight CVS, but I believe the branching
commands are the same. Are you one of the CVS administrators? At
any rate, your TCVS client will have a branch option and you can use
that to create your branch. Often what people do, is use the branch
for maintenance/support and the trunk/tip will be your new product
development. Also what it is often useful is to create a ‘fixed’
tag with a symbolic name first to reflect the start point of your new
branch. You might call it, “branchname_start”, basing that on the
latest revisions of what you have currently checked in. That would
not be a branch, just one of the symbolic tags you are used to
creating. Then to create your branch, choose the option to base it
off of the symbolic tag name you just created. More info on
creating branches in the online cvs documentation:

Subject: [TortoiseCVS] How to increment the left most revision
      number?

I have been using TCVS for some time. At this point I have files at
many different revisions... but they All have revision numbers of
      1.something.

Over the years I have made several "releases" using symbolic tags...
      all good..

For many reasons the time has come to actually branch virtually ALL
of the files. I expect this branch to last for quite some time.

I want to make the next revision on the main branch be revision
      2.something...

All the documentation I have been able to find talks about revisions
1.x and 2.x and 3.x, etc. but none ever explains how to do it.

I have not found any where in the TCVS documentation or the interface
to accomplish this. (TCVS 1.10.7; CVSNT 2.5.03 Bld2382)

I have found articles (online) that talk about doing a: cvs commit
-f -r x.x files but the version of cvsnt I have does not accept such
      a command.

      How can I do this?

      As usual, all suggestions accepted,

      Gordie
