slow shell

I'm new to the list so please excuse me if this problem has been *thoroughly* discussed and solved, but I'm finding that windows explorer is extremely slow to respond when I'm browsing folders on my local machine. all of my CVS folders are located in "c:\cvs local" so I tried to include this folder as per the instructions in the FAQ. unfortunately, this solution actually prevented any CVS actions for all folders within the included folder. this dissociation did, however, speed performance significantly.

how do I deal with the slow shell problem?

fyi:
* CVS = secure shell (ext), version 1.10.10 (client = v2.5.03, server 1.11.17)
* winXP sp3
* 3.2Ghz; 3.5GB ram
* user; no admin access to the CVS server.
