Well even though all versions looked the same I bit the bullet and did a 
re-build of   zlib1.22 and then Python2.5

That did the trick

Hey, Phil.  It looks to me like a problem with either your Python or your
Subversion bindings build.  Like, perhaps they weren't built against the
same version of zlib or something, and at runtime the wrong one is getting
referenced.
