Dear ViewVC Developers, As closely as I can determine from looking at the output, and reading the code, tabs in ViewVC are replaced (if at all) with eight spaces. If I am wrong on this, I would be pleased to be corrected. Tabbing (since the invention of the typewriter) is a columnar operation, where the columns are usually set at regular intervals. Most modern IDEs allow this to value to be selected, and the most frequent default appears to be 4. This means tabs should always generate at least one space, and then continue until the column count is a multiple of the desired regular interval. It would be a vast improvement reading code in ViewVC if it were possible to select this algorithm, and to parameterize it with the positions of the tab stops (although for programming use, just a single interval would suffice).
