I fixed the problem with 'standalone.py -r /path/to/repos' raising an Exception.

I'm not able to trigger any problems with the templates, though.  Oh.  Wait.
 I bet I know the difference.  I'm pointing -c to a viewvc.conf in my
installation target directory (where viewvc.conf lives in the root of that
directory).  I bet your pointing it to something in the ./conf source
directory.  The docs for the 'template_dir' variable indicate that the path
value is relative to viewvc.conf container directory.  If you'd set:

   template_dir = ../templates

in your configuration file, I bet that would have worked, too.
