I'm starting to consider ViewVC 1.2.0. There's no super-compelling set of
features necessitating it from a functionality standpoint, but I think
bumping to a new minor release might be prudent just in terms of managing
user expectations. Some of the things I'd like to do with ViewVC 1.2.0 that
don't feel "right" for 1.1.x include:
1. bumping the minimum required Python version to something much, much
newer -- at least Python 2.4 (which was released in 2004!)
2. ditching the explicit use of 'string' module. (see #1)
3. reworking the default template set to be more like the 'newvc'
contrib template set I introduced for 1.1.x
4. using difflib internally and ditching the GNU diff dependency. (see #1)
5. syntax highlighting and character set detection/transcoding for
the diff view, too. (depends, kinda, on #4)
I don't expect that we'll see a 1.2.0 release for still some time. Maybe
another six months or so. But I just wanted to share these thoughts,
especially as item 2 (which I'll probably start soon) will likely be a
booger in terms of wrecking the process of porting changes between trunk and
older versions.
