[viewvc-dev] ViewVC project moving from Tigris.org to GitHub effective immediately

Folks,

After many long years at Tigris.org, it's time for the ViewVC project to
move on to better-maintained pastures.  I've decided to transfer hosting
of the development side of the project to GitHub as soon as possible.  I
realize this is coming out of the blue, but there are a number of
factors that led me here:

 1. Tigris.org hasn't seen a service upgrade in many years.  It's still
    running Subversion 1.6.0, which is 7 1/2 years old ... from back
    before Subversion became "Apache Subversion".  I think even a casual
    observer could sense that the site is effectively on cruise control.
 2. Tigris.org has suffered repeated outages sporadically over the past
    several years, but almost constantly over the past couple of weeks. 
    Repositories hosted there are still BerkeleyDB-backed (see the
    aforementioned lack of service upgrades), which of course makes the
    repository stability all the more susceptible to outages.
 3. Let's be honest:  this migration is likely to have a day-to-day
    impact on exactly 0.027 developers, which is about the amount of
    mindshare I devote to the project these days.  :-)

I'll obviously be doing my best to migrate as much data as possible from
Tigris.org site and onto GitHub.  The repository history has already
been cloned (see https://github.com/viewvc/viewvc), and I'd like to at
least try to do something by way of copying open issues over, too.  I'm
happy to try to restore commit privileges to existing committers if they
want them -- just let me know what your GitHub account username is.

I'm undecided about what to do about the mailing lists, but am
/strongly/ leaning toward simply letting them disappear without
replacement.  We see only a small handful of legit mails annually, while
I'm moderating thousands of spam mails over the same time frame.  These
days, I figure StackOverflow is where folks go for user-level help, and
GitHub's issue tracker can handle dev-type discussions.

Finally, http://viewvc.org will remain intact, with nightly builds
continuing, etc.
