OK, so on some further investigation it seems the errors are perhaps 
caused by the data in the database, not the code per se. I've updated to 
1.1.1 and started rebuilding the database again with "svndbadmin purge" 
followed by "svndbadmin update".

It's not finished rebuilding yet, but I _can_ do queries at the top 
level so far...
