[viewvc-users] MySQL Commit Database? What is it for?

Background: We're using ViewVC with Subversion (latest and greatest of
both).

 

It's unclear to me what the MySQL backed commit database is used for and
I don't find much description of it in the documentation?

 

Testing it a bit there appears to be no functional difference with
ViewVC if it is enabled or not?  Neither functionally or performance?
What if anything are we missing if we don't use it?
