Peter, as I pointed out in that same blog post, I don't personally have much
experience with Mercurial, Git, etc.  There's a fantastic opportunity here
for someone who *does* to contribute vclib backends for one or more of those
version control systems.

Along the way I'm sure that -- as we did when I added support for Subversion
to ViewVC -- we'll find that some of the interfaces between ViewVC and
version control provider libraries aren't as general as they should be, or
can't express certain VC-specific concepts well, etc.  That's a necessary
pain of this process.  My understanding is that at least with Mercurial,
there's already a Python interface to work with, which I would expect *has*
to be of some help.  A simple, perhaps naive approach would need only to
implement 10-15 interfaces, answering questions about item types and
directory listings, revision log info, and so on.  But honestly, I have no
estimate for how much work even that would be.

If I had enough free time to learn Mercurial's concepts and put such an
integration into place myself I'd be keen on doing so, but that's a
conditional that returns FALSE for me pretty me universally these days.
