Hey, Niklaus.  Sorry you're experiencing problems.  Unfortunately, I can't
quickly point to a known problem in ViewVC which explains what you're
seeing.  Also, between versions 1.1.15 and 1.1.17, nothing even remotely
related to the way the commits database operates was modified in ViewVC.

I hate to be picky, but did you see exactly that error message in both
cases?  "The root 'cvs' was not found..." even when you tried to display the
RSS feed for your Subversion repository?
