Are the Tcl/TK Python bindings something I can fix?

Nothing in this area of the codebase has changed recently. Looks like a
problem in the Tcl/TK Python bindings.

Incidentally, ViewVC 1.1.x will be the last ViewVC release line to support
hte --gui option to standalone.py at all. That interface was woefully out of
date, unable to handle viewvc.conf files with any degree of complexity, etc.
So I've dropped it in the 'trunk' and it will not exist when (if...) ViewVC
1.2.0 is release.
