I got it to work...guess I don't really need the GUI that starts the server.

With the version of viewVC, I can leave off the -g option in standalone.py 
which starts the server without the GUI.  I can then go to 
http://localhost:49152/viewvc from my browser and everything works to include 
cvsgraph.

Playing middle-man between viewvc and tkinter wasn't proving to be very 
useful.

Since they are open-source, then yes, if you have the skillset and 
understanding to do so, you *can* fix them.  Otherwise, you might want to 
simply raise your issue with the community that maintains those bindings --  
maybe someone there can quickly recognize the problem and give you immediate 
feedback on a solution.

Unfortunately, I confess that I don't know precisely how to contact that 
community.  This appears to be a good starting point, though:
