That's a valid concern… I kept the "Botan 3 upgrade" and the "removing 
Botan 2" commits separated, so that we might go back.

But given the small audience of this project, do we have actual people 
running monotone on distros which don't support Botan3?

I know little of Debian, but AFAICT there are Botan3-enabled and i386 
Debian distros still? (please correct me)
