I'm getting much better results with that, gcc-4.6.3 compiles fine, and
allthe tests succeeded.  One little oddity I ran across is that I seem
to need gnu-make... sysv make here waits for standard input on a bunch
of sed invocation.  I'm sure that's not intentional, right?

Attached is rather big because of repetitions, and the warning level is
higher than I normally use, but enjoy it!
