   My apologies... I'd swear I was earlier getting an error
   running HP's make, but I'm unable to repeat it now.  Must've
   been doing something stupid!

No worries.  Perhaps the previous (now all removed, hopefully)
bash-isms in tests/ were involved?

Another thing -- tests/README has blurbs such as:

  make check TESTS='t149 t941'

Is that syntax specific to GNU make?  (Do other makes support it?)
Maybe that was another source of confusion?
