OK, this functionality now lives in newly-created, ephemeral, still
subject to rebase, will be merged eventually (see HACKING "branch
discipline") branch ‘q-sfwk’.  (Feel free to ignore branch ‘master’.)

Please let me know if you find any problems.  I intend to merge it into
‘p’ in a week or two.
