   I'm attempting to install rcs-5.8.2 into Solaris 10 8/11 running
   on an i86 (Intel T9400) and discovered the same error as Nelson
   Beebe in 5.7.96 for Solaris 10 on the AMD64.  Web searches did not
   indicate that the problem with function init_ephemstuff had been
   solved.  Any hints?

GCC 3.4.3 was released 2004-11-04.  I suggest you try a more recent
version.  FWIW, GCC 4.7.2 seems to work fine for me.  Also, latest
RCS is 5.9.2 (released 2013-11-28):

Perhaps that is better behaved?  (The code in question is the same
between those versions, i believe -- it's valid C99.)
