I can't test it right now and I'm not sure if I get to that on the
weekend, but it basically looks like what I'd have done if I had not
wanted to make the patch as small as possible.  As I said, no effort has
been spent so far to see why that recursion (which ostensibly should
have worked) in fact did not.

You've said you had cooked up something to check in configure, so if
maybe you could post this here before saturday I could run that too
while I'm in the code.
