   Meanwhile I've found that the original code now works after
   some updates of both Cygwin and gcc.  Which means it really
   was a bug in Cygwin or its gcc port.  I suggest to keep the
   new code however since there's little use for a test driver
   that isn't robust.

True, but then again, the sooner problems are discovered the
better...  anyway, i will leave it alone as you suggest.
