   After adding
   export LDFLAGS='-lpthread'; ./configure ...; make;
   make check
   returns
   [...]
   8 of 51 tests failed

Hmmm.  I am reluctant to invest debugging effort here until i
understand why the pthread stuff is even necessary for "make".
Let's concentrate on that upstream weirdness first, then return
to "make check" later, OK?
