Thanks for the wonderfully complete bug report.  I just committed two
(redundant) fixes to this problem in r5405 and r5406.

I manually did the same kind of test case reduction many times before it
dawned on me that it could be automated, and even better, put into the
hands of users.  It's a real time-saver :-)
