Fundamentally the problem is that I didn't appreciate the concept of _process_symbol_commit being used more than once for a single branch - i.e. to graft in revisions whose presence on the branch violates temporal constraints. Unfortunately I'm not going to have much time this weekend - Michael, is there an obvious easy way to make the deletion pass in _process_symbol_commit only apply when the symbol does not already exist?
