Awesome, thanks. With this and the nascent surrogate root patch I
proposed, we get a spotless 0-line diff (between old CVS checkout and
new git checkout) across 80 (!) different tags.

I'll follow up with a test case and a fleshed-out patch for the
surrogate root feature.
