Well, the system is an ARM based embedded SBC/SOC  that, unfortunately only comes with Debian Sarge, out of the box.
I agree this is a bit long in the tooth, but the distro version is beyond my control.

The distribution comes with a subversion client. Unfortunately the packaged version does not do externals very well.
So, I was attempting to upgrade the client to something more recent.
I may just set up updating software from SVN remotely using SCP or rsync  of a reote checkout instead.

It's probably the only work around I can do, short of making a new, custom, OS distro for the device.

How of is Debian Sarge?  Is it 15 years old?
I previously attempted to compile a new version of GCC on the device, but ran into limitations in memory, cross-compilation, and allocated time.
