Thanks for all of our help.

I am not sure which specifically fixed it...
but I deleted my workspace and also found a .eclipse folder in my home directory which I deleted too.

Re-installing eclipse after this - and then the Subclipse plugin, now sees me back to normal operation.

As always thanks for the speedy replies / help.
