VSS is just a fancy fileshare and can be backed up as such. The key is
to make sure that no users are in the database while backing it up. In
the case of plain VSS on a fileshare, it is best to have a backup script
that unshares the VSS folder before kicking off the backup util. If the
server is running SOS, you should stop the SOS service before running
the backup. Linda might have more info on SOS specific backup
strategies.

If there are users in the database when a backup occurs, the names.dat
file can be skipped. If you have to restore a DB and are missing the
names.dat you will loose every long filename in the DB and have to
rename them by hand. I have walked many customers through this recovery.
It is extremely painful.  Please test your backups. :-)

The MSFT article is the source of my question.

They *imply* that you should NOT use ssarc since they mention

the difference between incremental and full backups.

To me, that says to use MSFT Backup or another 3rd party tool.
