WTH? with vertex painting?

I've got some faces that just don't take a paint.
And then I cannot get the painting to show up in rendering.

Any tips?

Or, say you want a procedural paint-- faces Nx to Ny get say a skin
color, faces Nz to Na get a shirt color, etc.   I'm **not** into
making image maps of things.  How have you all done this?  Tips to
pointers appreciated as well, thanks.
