I do not consider myself an expert...but the wireframe works for me. When I need to make a special look or transition I will either copy, the parts I do not want to see, to another layer. If that does not work then I create a copy and delete what I don't want.
 
Either approach is very fast and as long as I don't mess with the original copy I can try several approaches. 
 
There seems to always be at least 3 ways to do anything in Blender. ;-)

I am not sure this really would help.  The wireframe option
shows ALL wireframe lines, not only the edge of the overal
object, but also the ege of every panel; unless there is
an additional setting (that I am unaware of) required.
