Trees have always been a difficulty for me.... I have lately just been blending stuff I am not good at to help me improve. Advice for natural things would be that they are random... perfection is something you have no choice but to skip... symmetry is non existant in nature, that should als be remember with humans(as we are all natural ourselves.. well mostly anyway) It's usually good to start with a reference image... sometimes nice to stick it in the viewport. Use the proportional editing tool(o key) to drag other verts along. Play with curves, bevobs, and taperobs. I'm a little rambly right now... seems i usually am... hope i said something coherant enough to help you.
