help restoring blender

I installed 2.41 and totally hate it. the materials dont work for crap
for some reason now when I reinstalled 2.37 it still defaults to the
2.41 settings also attempted to open a file I created in 2.37 hoping
it would come up normal so I could save the user settings but it also
opened with the 2.41 settings. so how do I erase the memory of 2.41
settings. I dont know why the materials look so crappy its driving me
bonkers.
