Newbie

Hello, I'm rather new to Blender and 3D graphics for tht matter. A friend of mine recomended it to me and told me about all the tutorials and everything. I have been working on a project for the last three nights (I can't find time to work on it during the day.) I'm trying to make a rather simple sword, but right now it looks like a club. How can I flatten it out a bit and make the edges look sharp and more like a blade?
