You can try 3dbuzz, they taught entrirely different software, I'm not sure wether blender is one of their software or not. But what's matter most is the concept, not the tool. And if you don't really care about budget, or your son really wanted to be a real animator go check animationmentor.com. The class there is purely for character animations, they teach from the very basic to advanced. Featuring people who's been working for pixar and dreamworks.
