This is indeed what I want to do, but to move the 3d cursor to the center mass of an object, I have to first go into edit mode and then select all vertices and then Cursor->Selection. This indeed does the job, moving around the object equidistant, but I was looking for a simpler solution;). When I select something, whether in object or edit mode, I have a center of interest; in 99.9% of the cases, when I move my view, I want to tumble about this center of interest. So maybe something like hold down a modifier key and then hold down a mouse button.
