Hello Michael.
I know Blender's learning curve can be a little steep
at first, mainly because of its non "standard" user
interface, but the benefits of it regarding efficiency
and speed are worth it.
I would suggets you to check the "Blender 3D: Noob to
Pro" wikibook.
http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Blender_3D:_Noob_to_Pro
It's one of the best learning resources for Blender,
and it's content is more up to date than the official
Blender manual.
