Thanks. By rotating as you suggested then aligning to view as Ian suggested I now have it sorted. Now I hope to make some progress.

In case you haven't noticed yet, Blender has MANY hotkeys and shortcuts.  So many that I consider Blender to be the most difficult program to learn.  But once you learn it - WOW!  Very worth the effort.

Once you add Suzanne, push 3 for a side view, then 'R' to rotate, hold down the CTRL key, move your mouse to rotate and watch the number in the lower left corner.  When it gets to -90.00, click and now she should match the tutorials.

Is that what you meant or did I totally miss the point?
