Hi Bob,
I think what you're really looking for is a realistic material for your
object, correct?
The simplest way to build a neat-looking render is to take a half-cube
(floor & 2 walls) and make it your "set" for the render, so scale the
set object about twice as big as your cad file. (or shrink your cad
file, either way works) Then use a basic 3-point lighting setup (plenty
of tutorials on the net about that to be found), apply whatever material
you like to your cad object and render.
If you don't want to start tweaking material parameters yourself, there
are a number of blender material library files you can download if you
look for them, and you can then just import the material with shift-F1
into your current file and apply it to your object.
That should result in a simple and elegant looking render, as long as
you move the camera to the right direction and angle. You can see what
the camera sees by hitting the numpad "0" in the 3D view, and adjust
your camera/object position that way.
