You may not need something, doesn't mean I don't. ;-)

If you want to write a self-extracting shell script you can proceed. 
Like autotools maintenance, not an easy skill to find. Probably not 
feasible to delegate.

Getting package maintainers back in place is a beginning. It's too much 
for one person.
