Hmm, I do not use meld any longer (now I use ediff in Emacs), but it was
quite good. Have you tried xxdiff?

otoh, my experience using DVCS tools like darcs (bzr, hg...)is that I
produce produce smaller patches 'cause commit is very cheap, especially
in darcs' with its cherrypicking features...
