[CinePaint] CinePaint failure

I have been using CinePaint without problems for several months but am
now having some strange occurrences.

Having read the HDR tutorial I decided to run some tests of my own and
eventually got a very acceptable result using BFI image precision. I
then saved the file both in 'hdr' and 'tif' formats ... I then went on
to open and edit the tif file successfully in 2 other programs without
incident.

I then went back into CinePaint which immediately closed down as soon as
I tried to open any file whatsoever! No error message .. no warning ..
nothing. Not just the processed files .. all files!

I removed CinePaint totally from the system with all associated files
and then reloaded it. Same problem.

some ideas would be appreciated.
