Meanwhile, I tried the URL Kai-Uwe recommended:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/hardy/i386/cinepaint/0.22-1-0ubuntu1

All the packages (.deb) did install alright--with the exception of
CinePaint itself. :-( It says that 'libopenexr2c2a' is missing. Via
Google I found a thread on Ubuntu "Hardy", and this led me to
a new Ubuntu repository:

http://ppa.launchpad.net/secretlondon/ubuntu

which includes CinePaint 0.22-3, but since I still have 'cinepaint-data
0.22-1'. the package won't install. That's the problem: to get all
dependencies right.

FYI, here's the apt-line nonetheless, to include it into the "Hardy"
repositores (for all Ubuntu users):

'deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/secretlondon/ubuntu hardy main restricted
universe multiverse'.

I guess, when I find a way to get this 'libopenexr2c2a', I am able to
install the .deb package from Launchpad. (A RPM would have to be
converted to .deb via 'alien' first, and there's still the problem
with the dependencies as well.)
