The scanner is capable of 48 bits (3 x 16 bits per channel or a "16 bit image"). Iscan is giving you a 24 bit image, which probably means 3 x 8 bits/channel - "8 bit image". For the modest cost, I have found Vuescan to be excellent scanning software which can save as 16 bit.
