You may want to try compiling again with the option "--enable-debug." In conjunction with gdb, this may provide more information such as contents of variables and memory locations at the time of crash. Also, if you need tiff format, a work around is possible until things get straightened out. Just save the file as PNM format. PNM accepts 16-bit data. Then convert to TIFF manually with "convert" from ImageMagick (or GraphicsMagick) or "pnmtotiff" from NetPBM.
