[CinePaint] CinePaint 0.25-0, Archlinux 64bit, GCC version 4.6.0 20110415 (prerelease) working beautifully! :) a quick note about GCC 4.6 compilation, the CVS script and a question too.

hi everyone,

I've just joined the cine-paint user list.   I have been using
Cine-paint on and off for about a year or two.  As post above i am a
linux user. I used to use Cine-paint in Both Fedora
and have also used in gentoo and Ubuntu.  I think (if i remember
correctly they all are using 0.22, last time i checked anyway Fc14 for
sure). Anyways, it had always been a fairly buggy experience,
but as anyone knows, who uses linux. for good photo or film retouching
- your options are very slim for these types of applications.

One of the only real option I had was to deal with Cine-paint bugs (be
aware of them / avoid them) and the odd error message. I always had a
very difficult time getting it to compile correctly, as well -
compounding the problem. So the other option was to run say PhotoShop
CS4 in VMware workstation - which i do, in a Snow Leopard 10.6.7 guest
( yes you can hack some 2D / 3d acceleration), anyways.

Maybe a month ago i had tried to compile Cine-Paint from CVS in
ArchLinux, not really expecting it to work - which it didn't. :( so
yet again i seemed to be stuck with version 0.22. which loved to throw
error messages and periodically crash - fun fun....

ArchLinux (for those who don't know) is a very bleeding-edge Linux
distro, more so than Fedora, gentoo, etc. it is also very "upstream" -
as in Arch-developers don't like to patch things for Arch specifically
(pretty much the opposite of how canonical likes to do things,
downstream patch after patch - most of which get regected by upstream,
not good) - Arch would rather report upstream and then see a (proper)
fixed update, within a day. which is usaully the case. moving on...

As stated in the subject, i am also using a GCC 4.6.0 "Pre-release"
from a about a week ago. **  this is worth noting as i am not sure how
many linux users at this point would be using it, yet.
I had a few pieces of software than would no longer compile
FireFox-PGO (profile-guided optimization), and Ardour3 ( multitrack
audio workstation). but After some tinkering, I was able to get both
to compile. It would seem GCC 4.6 is a little more strict in how it
handles warnings, among other things.... So then, today I decided to
give Cine-paint another go.

I told GCC to not treat warnings as errors;

export CXXFLAGS="${CFLAGS} -fpermissive"  (before running the installation)

It compiled in a few minutes, not real problems and i am good to go :)
 this version is sweet, no stupid errors when loading a flipbook, and
in every test - all files are always visible in the flipbook sidebar -
this wasn't the case for me previously. It would still work, it was
just messy, and harder to use.  However, the Scroll-bar still doesn't
work. i just expand the window and use the keyboard to navigate.
0.25.0 hasn't crashed yet and seems much quicker to boot. (i should
mention that i am running gnome2.32 and also Compiz++ 0.9.4 ).

A couple last things to mention - the CVS (user not dev) script
doesn't actually work properly, i am sure you are aware but it fails
at ./autogen.sh (as it is not set to be execuable).

and lastly,  is there any issues with using CFLAGS ~   -march=native
and mtune-native  ???  i see you guys have it set to generic 86_64,
which i typically never use in compilation, unless i know the native
flags will cause a problem..

anyways, this just made my whole day brighter. not that using VMware
for some stuff is a big deal, but it does interrupt my workflow
sometimes, as i am using Maya in Linux, so obviously running VMware
guests and Maya is not a very bright idea ( i have decent hardware but
not the newest ).

anyways, i thought some linux user might find this bit of GCC 4.6.0
helpful, and you can add Archlinux as a supported Platform.  I may
actually make a PKGBUILD for cinepaint (never done it before, but it
shouldn't be too hard to do ).

PS: I also plan send bug reports, if and when they come up - as i
believe cine-paint to be a very useful application - the only one of
it's kind for linux (that i know of)
