Also true. The only choices I have in the stock Ubuntu are libpng12
and libpng3, with libpng12 installed by default, because there are
many tools using it.

For a system as complex as cinepaint, there is no good way of
distributing it. You either have to build everything from a proven set
of sources and include them in the distribution, or spend heroic
efforts maintaining a versatile build system, or similarly heroic
efforts maintaining multiple binary packages for each of the
increasingly idiosyncratic OS distributions.

I guess it is as good as it gets.
