Thanks for this info.

How has this change been effected?  I am using Gentoo with the latest
gcc and binutils but I do not experience this implicit reference issue.

Redhat/Fedora seems to have a fix for their cinepaint source.  Included
in the RPM for cinepaint-0.25 is a dso patch that adds various libraries
to the proto-Makefiles.  Although this patch is for 0.25 and can't be
applied to the 1.0 source, it indicates which files need to be modified and
could make the job of manual patching easier.

The patch just adds -lm to the LDADD variable in certain proto-Makefiles,
but more changes seem to be needed for 1.0.  Maybe a sed script or equivalent
could do the job.
