As an alternative, you could also try to disable the pdf plugin (and
hope that nothing else goes wrong).

Makefile.in in subdir plug-ins of the main distribution contains a
list of subdirectories(i.e., plugins) to be compiled. Try commenting
out the line that says pdf (or @PDF), running ./configure and make. I
haven't tried it so proceed with caution.
