Hi Frank,
Many thanks for that info. After a bit of searching found the plug-ins 
folder in /usr/bin/lib/cinepaint/1.3.0/ and now can open jpegs etc.
In the process also found the Gradients and Brushes folder in 
/usr/bin/share/cinepaint/1.3.0 The Palettes and Patterns when I added 
the path for these just crashed Cinepaint.
Now experimenting with ICC profiles.
