I'm totally new to cinepaint
AMD64 Debian Testing ('Wheezy') 4G RAM 1TB HDD

1. downloaded tarball
2. fixed dependencies (I think)
3. ran 'configure' as root
4. ran 'make' (noticed a lot of warnings)
5. ran 'make install'

cinepaint shows in menu in graphics section
click it but nothing

6. opened xfce terminal
7. ran 'cinepaint'

I get the following message:
cinepaint: error while loading shared libraries: libcinepaint.so.1:
cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

8. ran 'updatedb'
9. then 'locate libcinepaint.so.1'

result:
#locate libcinepaint.so.1
/home/xx/cinepaint-1.0-4/lib/.libs/libcinepaint.so.1
/home/xx/cinepaint-1.0-4/lib/.libs/libcinepaint.so.1.0.0
/home/xx/cinepaint-1.0-4/lib/.libs/libcinepaint.so.1.0.0T
/usr/local/lib/libcinepaint.so.1
/usr/local/lib/libcinepaint.so.1.0.0

Can anyone give me some clues?
Best regards
Graeme
